1. I have never come across anyone playing Benjamin or multicoloured 2D if anyone does play these conventions please tell me why?

2. How do we define ACOL? If you can have multiple subsystems and multiple conventions outside the standard conventions does there come a point where you can no longer claim to playing ACOL?

We have just come back from a RTW cruise where the Bridge director started by announcing her EBU qualifications and then spent most of every day policing the tables to ensure strict enforcement of the rules. I was particularly irritated by the insistence that the boards stay in the middle of the table during play; not to the side or in the corner of the table or the chair besides but smack bang in the middle of the table making us play the cards over the top of the board. Notwithstanding the fact that all four players were happy for the board to be placed elsewhere she insisted that it stay in the middle of the table because “that’s the rules.” - stupid.

At a recent Mr Bridge weekend, I first came across the phrase "Having none partner?", something which I hadn't heard before. (Only been playing club bridge for a few years.) However, having remembered it this morning I was thinking that if this phrase is also available to the opposition, albeit in the amended form of "Having none ....?", then the problem might be more easily resolved. I can't see how the opponents pointing out the lack of a suit is any different from the partner.]]>

Next question: In a search for the answer to that question on previous threads in this forum I have seen posts of people referring to a Stayman response over bids other than 1NT and 2NT – surely any response of 2C or 3C over any bid other than NT cannot be called Stayman?

I was under the impression that any card called for by declarer is a played card.

The director ruled in favour of declarer on the following,

Declarer (south) led from his hand and west ruffed.
Declarer called a card from the table which effectively was an underruff.
He immediately realised he had made a mistake, & corrected this to a higher trump & claimed it was an "unintended designation".

I thought that once a card is called for, it is played.

The clause referred to above seems to cast doubt on this. Was the director right? If he was wrong can you please provide an example of where clause 4(b) in Law 45 applies.

(We now realise that it could have been corrected as it was a manual error, but at the time she didn't.)
Following this more bidding continued and at the end of the auction my partner ended up in 3NT. (Unfortunately going one off - not enough hearts !)
Q. What at the end of the auction should (or shouldn’t) she have told our opponents to redress her error ?

I have always played 2C (Stayman) followed by 3C over opener's response as a weak sign off, whereas a direct raise to 3C is a positive (game going) bid showing a Club suit.

A few evenings ago, my partner opened 1NT to which I responded 3C, with a solid six card club suit with definite slam potential after my partners opening. To my amazement, partner passed, as he interpreted the bids the other way round! Consequently we missed out on a stone cold 6 Clubs.

So what is the current "accepted" way of differentiating between weak sign offs and forcing bids in the minors when using Stayman and Transfers?

The logic behind my approach is that when using transfers, the best sequence for a weak take out in Diamonds is to use Stayman, which allows you to stop in 2D when opener does not have a four card major.

So, if using 2C as the route to a weak diamond take out, it seems to make sense to be consistent (and try to avoid confusion) and use the same bid as the route to a weak take out in both minors. Direct jumps to 3C or 3D then become positive, forcing bids.

My further reasoning is, what is the value in giving the opponents information about the shape of partner's hand by having to use stayman as the route to show a game going minor suit hand with no interest in the majors.]]>

How would you bid these EW hands?

W holds S A; H AKQxxxx; D Jxxxx; C void
E holds: S Qx; H Jx; D Qxx; C AKQJxx

West opens and the auction goes:
1H-2C-3H-4NT-5S-6H

The 4NT was RKCB - 5S should show 2 keycards and the Q of trumps. W felt it would be better to show one less key card on that hand. The contract went two off.

What would constitute a 'sensible' bidding sequence to stop in 4H?
