Mr Bridge Newsletter December 21

Catching Up

Event organisers and club officials have been contacting me for prizes and help with organising fund-raising events using bridge as a vehicle to provide a means of reaching the generous bridge-playing public.

This is hardly surprising as I deliberately set out to establish myself as the nation’s Mr Bridge. Some of you may remember the late Palmer Bayer who introduced the concept of No Fear Bridge as part of the campaign for Better Bridge in Britainin the early eighties. In the course of our many conversations, it was he who first put the idea of enlightened self-interest into my head.

That enabled me to offer constructive help to charitable trusts and organisations seeking to raise funds. I was able to provide small prizes, free samples and experimental nick-knacks. In addition, I also encouraged individuals to write for my support in the certain knowledge that their requests would always be met with a positive response.

Playing Cards

It seems like a million years ago but back in 2019 I launched my clean cards at the table initiative, which most club officials (but not all) worked out was a heavily subsidised promotion. Cards will need to be changed much more frequently than in the past and to help with this I am looking to reintroduce the £72 for 72 packs of premium quality cards.  I am investigating bar-coded cards for those with older dealing machines. I need to know if there is sufficient interest. Let me know by email as soon as possible.

DBRS

Copies of the popular Duplicate Bridge Rules Simplified booklet are available at £5.95.

Discounted Postage

I offer 2 unused postage stamps to make up the value of 1st class (85p) or 2nd class (66p).

100 x 1st class £74.50.
100 x 2nd class £59.60.

Club Insurance

Club Committee members are reminded that club insurance policies were due for renewal on November 1st. There are good reasons for prompt renewal now that F2F bridge is restarting. Ring Fidentia 020 3150 0080.

Every bridge club should be covered, thereby ensuring that each and every committee member is covered. The insurance package is designed to suit clubs of up to 300, for only £75 per year. If you are lucky enough to have more than 300 members ring Fidentia and ask for Tom Harvey who is always very helpful and will provide a competitive quote.

If your club is still not meeting due to Covid, it is advisable to keep risks covered. Club property remains insured even when it is stored in members’ homes.

In addition, the committee needs to be protected against libel and slander as well as the risks of running and managing a club. Cover for this at £75 per year per club seems a bargain to me.

Bone China Mugs

I had this Christmas card design adapted to fit bone china mugs, which enterprising clubs might use as prizes for any bridge that is organised over the Christmas period. They come in boxes of 6 mugs for £35 (see image at top of page). They also make lovely Christmas presents.

Meanwhile, I wish you a very happy and Holy Christmas.

All good wishes,

Mr Bridge
